Sacagawea (also Sakakawea, Sacajawea; c. 1788 - December 20, 1812; see below for other theories about her death) was a Lemhi Shoshone woman, who accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, acting as an interpreter and guide, in their exploration of the Western United States. She traveled thousands of miles from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean between 1804 and 1806. Clark nicknamed her Janey.[1]

Reliable historical information about Sacagawea is very limited. She has become an important part of the Lewis and Clark mythology in the American public imagination. The National American Woman Suffrage Association of the early twentieth century adopted her as a symbol of women's worth and independence, erecting several statues and plaques in her memory, and doing much to spread the story of her accomplishments.[2]

In 2000, the United States Mint issued the Sacagawea dollar coin in her honor, depicting Sacagawea and her son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The face on the coin was modeled on a modern Shoshone-Bannock woman named Randy'L He-dow Teton. No contemporary image of Sacagawea exists.

My Cousin Glen

I want to tell you a story. A story about my cousin Glen. You see Glen is a distant cousin of mine who I did not see as much as I probably should have. I would run into him at family events, in church, around the holidays and at some Christian rock shows. He is a bit older than I and unfortunately his body has been plagued with bad health. He has been on dialysis for diabetes for some time. Needless to say he has been in pain for a long time. Glen was quite pail and walked with a cane for a long wile. In the last months his health has really turned for the worse.

But the crazy thing is, you would not have any idea how his health was by his attitude. Every time I came in contact with him, he was ALWAYS in high spirits. He knew how to make people smile and laugh. He had such a funny way of knowing just what to say at the right time to break the ice at any awkward situation. He would crack jokes and I can honestly say I never once saw him frown; other than making a funny face. He was always smiling and it seemed as though he really got it. It seemed like he really knew how to be happy all the time. He didn't want to be in the spot light; however he could lighten up a room. He went through life living as a simple man and loved the lord. That was who he was...that is what his soul is.

I remember a year ago, I went to a rock show at a local church. Seventh Day Slumber was playing with a few other harder bands and Glen and his lovely wife Karen came too. I did not know they were going to be going. So here I am, hanging out with a few of my peeps when this frail and pale dude walks up to me with a cane and a rock shirt on sporting a funny face. I almost died laughing. It was Glen, he didn't skip a beat. He must of been SO strong...he WAS SO STRONG.

I wish I could be like that. I wish I could bring a smile to everyone's face as he did. I wish I could be a simple kind of man and lead a life like that. He showed me that no matter what... NO MATTER WHAT... you can control your attitude and just be happy and joyful. I can learn from him that your attitude and faith in the Lord will help you endure the worst... while you act the best.

The Lord called Glen home today around 8:00 AM this morning. His last few hours were with his mother and father. Now he is with the father - free from all pain that he has been pushing through. His eternal life is just starting and I am so happy for him. It's weird that I'm happy for him while writing this as I'm crying now. He deserves the riches that only heaven can offer. I'm sure he already made GOD laugh a few times. They are probably cracking up right now. Although our family will miss him greatly, we know that he is home.

Do you REALLY Believe in Liberty?

September 1, 2010 - A deep philisophical question to be pondered and prayed about...

If you truly believe in liberty, must not you also believe in the liberty of someone you despise?.

Photo Identification

July 18th, 2010 - This photo states that it is Hattie, Calista and Ada Leach. Can anyone confirm this? How about when it was taken? Email me with info at chris@thestreeters.net.

Photo Identification Confirmation

July 18, 2010 - Hi Chris

The couple pictured on the web site is my mother and her first husband...Jennie Leach and Dorick Pelerin. I believe the photo was taken in 1918 or 1919.

If at any time you are going through pictures up at the old house...if you find one of Gramma Leach... I would appreciate you sending me a copy. Ruth said she had seen one but did not know what happened to it. I have one of her as a young girl with long ringlets, but would like an older one if it is found.

Thanks, enjoying the web site.

Your 2nd cousin,

Sally

Photo Identification Confirmation

July 18, 2010 - Hi Chris

You may have received this info from someone else, but the picture of the man and woman on your website, is my Mother, Jennie Sturtevant and her 1st husband, Dorick Pelerin. Jennie was your Grandmother's sister. I met you when you were just a little boy, my name is Marian Jones (Sturtevant). I have really enjoyed the website since finding it. Keep up the good work. I was able to attend your Aunt Dot's memorial service. I was so disappointed to have to miss Ruth's. We had planned on seeing her this summer while we were in the area. It was so good to see many of the Streeters again.

The other pictures you asked for identification, the girl looks like it could be Eleanor, the boy, one of your Uncles, I think.

Your 2nd cousin,

Marian

Palm Sunday Cookout

Snow Canyon State Park

March 28, 2010 - Since Sidney's familiy is in town, we decided to go to Snow Canyon State Park:

for a cookout. I cooked up a bunch of these:

and a good time was had by all.

After lunch, each of the adults hid about a dozen easter eggs and the three girls (Addison, Emily and our most frequent flyer friend, Sydnee Linton) each had to find 16 eggs. It wasn't long before they had most of them located. But when we got down to the last six eggs, we started having some trouble finding them. That's because the eggs were hidden in this:

We hunted, and we hunted, and we hunted and we hunted...no eggs. After about three or four really good looks by everyone, adults included, we came to the conclusion that the Easter Lizard found them and stashed them away from some other family to find. Nontheless, everyone enjoyed the hunt including (Grandpa) Bill and (Gran) Evelyn.

Happy Valentine's Day!

February 14, 2010 - Happy Valentine's Day!

On Thursday evening, we held our 3rd annual Valentine’s box crafting night. As usual, Daddy was on hand for the technical details while Mommy made dinner and the girls were Master Designers of the assembled boxes.

Emily chose a mail box so we made a little orange flag that raises and lowers. Addi went with a Lady Bug. We cut red disposable plastic bowls in half to use for wings and a red disposable cup for the head.

It was about 1-½ hours of great family time and the girls we so proud to take their creations to school.

Be Still and Know That I Am Still God!

February 5, 2010 - I was thinking this morning... I have a lot of friends that are very concerned about the direction in which our great country is headed. How our rights as believers in Christ are being mocked, belittled, made fun of and, in some cases, just plain trampled upon. Many times when I talk to people, it seems almost immediately, the conversation turns to begin talking politics and how our government is putting us in a debt that will, by no means ever be paid. The wars that are being fought in the name of freedom all the while, there is a group of people in Washington that are doing everything in their power to see to it that they control as many as our freedoms as possible. There really is no way, for a thinking person, to deny the truths that are so evident regarding our freedoms being infringed upon. All you need to do is watch the evening news and you will see that these concerns are real.

But as I ponder on these rights and freedoms that are being taken from me one by one it makes me think... what about the rights that I have been given by my Creator that, by no means, can be taken by any man-made government?

For example: I have the right to rest in the fact that there is nothing that anyone can say or do that can in any way change who I forever am in Christ. They can mock me, make fun of me, even kill me. It still does not change, even one little tiny bit, who Christ is and what He did for me. (Romans 8:1)

I have the right to not be affected by what is going on around me, to take my eyes off the world and put them on Jesus. I love the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Not only that they refused to worship any other god but the one true God regardless of the consequences, but what I love about this story is their attitude about it. I love how they put it: "and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up." (Daniel 3) So, in essence, they tell the Nebuchadnezzar, our God can and will deliver us from your hand but, even if He doesn’t, we will still worship and praise HIM!... WOW! And perhaps my favorite part of the story is, when they were brought out of the furnace, not one hair was singed, not one part of their clothing was burned, and possibly my favorite... they didn’t even smell like smoke. How many people do you know that, within the first few minutes of talking to them, begin to tell you about everything that is wrong in the world or even in their own life? You instantly begin to "smell the smoke" of what they see to be the injustices in their world. When you ask me how I am doing and I give you one of my typical answers such as, "I’m Loving Life" or "Living the Dream," I’m not kidding. I look at what God has given me and I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why He has chosen to bless me to the extent He has.

I also have the right to not worry about our current financial situation. Luke 12:22-31: "22 Then He said to His disciples, 'Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on. 23 Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap, which have neither storehouse nor barn; and God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds? 25 And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 26 If you then are not able to do the least, why are you anxious for the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 If then God so clothes the grass, which today is in the field and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith? 29 And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you." This subject is covered numerous times in the Gospels, each having its own way of expressing what Christ is conveying, but they all come to the same conclusion...STOP WORRYING! It not only doesn’t help the situation, it makes it worse! Those of you who know me well know that I have a relatively good grasp on this one and I will tell you, I thank God every day that He has gifted me with this ability.

There are so many rights that I have, endowed by my Creator, that I would love to get in to but this is getting a little lengthy as it is so I will summarize... I have the right to BE STILL AND KNOW THAT GOD IS STILL GOD. (Psalm 46:10) And there is nothing this world can do about THAT! I’ll be honest; there are things in my life that are very difficult to deal with but... "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

May the God of all bless you today and every day!

Are People God’s Milestone Markers for Us?

January 16, 2010 - Have you ever thought about a person you may have known many years ago and just found yourself lost in thought about what has happened in that person’s life since you last connected with them?

I found myself there tonight, thinking about a person I’ll call "Junior" that I may have seen once or twice in the last 30 years but I know it’s been at least 20 since the last time I saw him. Could Junior somehow be one of God’s milestone markers for my life? Does God reintroduce people again after many years vis-à-vis a chance meeting? Does God bring thoughts of these people to our attention at very specific moments of our lives to promote reflection?

I found myself wondering how our respective lives many have been different if we had been more closely connected. Would my life have been better or worse? Would it have been slightly or dramatically different? What other crossroads have I encountered that have impacted my life in some significant way?

While I am uncertain whether the scenario I describe is a common human theme, I can say I had that exact experience this evening. After I had put the girls down and Sidney went off to sleep (I’ve always been a night owl), I found myself thinking about Junior. He had experienced some unique and difficult trails in his adult life (as we all do). Suddenly I became overwhelmed with concern for Junior to the point of stopping what I was doing to pray for him. I had likely not thought about him in many years but I felt compelled to stop what I was doing and pray for him.

I must confess that this is not typical for me. I pray often - not usually formally on my knees - but I do pray many times daily, I just talk to God as I go through my day. That’s prayer for me. So I had to consider why I believe God was summoning me - a person who just isn’t regularly connected with Junior or familiar with this Johnny-on-the-spot focused prayer - to pray for him right then. This person must have needed something right at that moment and I was the one God had predestined to pray for him.

So for me this experience was two-fold. On the one hand, this was obviously part of God’s plan for some reason that I do not know and may never know. On the other hand, I believe it was one of God’s milestone markers for my life. It brought brief period of self reflection and assessment which are critical components of a rewarding and successful life.

May God bring you some time for reflection this week.

Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out?

January 9, 2010 - In the 1960's Timothy Leary coined this phrase while in the shower and subsequently made it famous. He was referring to the use of LSD and other psychedelics to promote deeper consciousness. Unfortunately, most interpreted this as "get stoned" and forget the world.

Today, the "opiate of the masses" is television. According to a 2006 study from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), there were 285 million televisions in use in US households. That's one for every person in the country and about 3 to 4 units per household. Television is a universal product that everyone who lives in this county, no matter what economic condition they live in, is intimately familiar with.

In our household, we have noted the ideas and changing attitudes which have surfaced in the form of questions formulated in minds of our children. The images that are relentlessly infused into their highly impressionable subconscious minds have already begun to present their controlling effects. That is why our family has decided as a New Year’s resolution to discontinue live television service in our home. Yes, you heard me right, we decided to take the red pill and wake up to a whole new world of self-education and critical thinking. We have cancelled our satellite TV service and turned off the influences.

It has new been ten days since we made this decision and I can tell you that we have and still are experiencing withdrawal from the easy, mind-numbing sedative so easily available via the lobotomy box. It is not an easy decision to make, and we have actually been struggling with it for a year or more. But we finally decided that sometimes good things require some very tough decisions.

We have already begun to see some small changes. I personally spend more time reading, researching current events in light of Biblical prophecy (an interest of mine) and writing (another highly underused interest and talent of mine). We have all found ourselves turning on our music and worshiping God in place of a "fix" of TV. Our home is more peaceful and we are less distracted and more interactive.

We’re not sure of all the benefits this journey will produce but I will share the insights we gleam from this new experiment in the weeks and months to come.

Bryce Canyon Utah - A Two Day Retreat

January 4, 2010 - One of our Christmas gifts this year was a three day, two night retreat to Bryce Canyon National Park. The park is located in south-central Utah about 2-½ hour's drive from St George. Bryce Canyon is famous for "hoodoo" rock formations made in the soft sandstone common in the southwestern United States.

We are staying at Ruby's Inn - a Best Western Mountain Lodge. The Lodge has a general store, a great restaurant and a really comfy lobby with a huge stone fireplace and big, soft leather couches which we have spent hours of our visit on. I am actually writing this story while sitting on one of those couches all cozy and warm by the fire.

The elevation here at the Inn is about 8,000 feet above sea level. This means it is much colder than it is in St. George (which is about 2,900 feet above seal level) and has snow regularly during the winter months. It also means the air is "thinner" here with lower levels of oxygen. It is noticeable when you do anything even slightly strenuous like going for a walk - the lack of oxygen becomes evident right away.

Sidney and I have had a wonderful time just relaxing and catching up on reading and note writing. It's nice to slow down - even for just a little while. We found ourselves more interested in other people and "enjoying the moment" with them as it is a special place where we all experience something much bigger than ourselves. As such, people are more open to a friendly wave or hello than in the rat race of normal life.

Since our trip began about 30 hours ago, we have been fortunate enough to see a Silver Fox, a Golden Eagle, a pair of Bald Eagles, Mule Deer, Ravens, Jack Rabbits and of course many varieties of birds. God has blessed us with sightings of some of his most rare creations over the last couple of days.

The lodge is very comfortable and a great place to relax and unwind. The food is quite good albeit a little pricey. We packed in some of our own snacks to save a little on food costs. This is our third trip to Bryce and we just love it. We highly recommend it during the winter months if you want an inexpensive, low-key retreat.
